Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

 One thing that 12 Monkeys does is make it seem very dull on purpose. The short film uses a narrator with a very monotone voice to show this off. Also, the movie uses still images and adds voiceovers or other sounds to them after. This once again achieves the same goal, being to make the film detached. Le Jetee uses certain transitions to acquire a "dream-like ambiance" which helps to contrast the clean shots when characters are conversing. The film also uses audio to great effect and adds it a lot of important and disturbing imagery to amplify the visuals. An example used for this is the audio of a heart beating for a dramatic and intense scene. This helps the audience feel the intensity of the pictures being shown as if their own heart was racing. Another example of this is a slick and romantic score for a positive effect on the audience, once again enhancing the images. One thing the short film does is dip into multiple genres which makes the film more diverse and appealing to a wider audience. My takeaway from the video is that 12 monkeys/Le Jetee did a lot for a movie its age and worked successfully with the lo-fi elements it used. These movies were unique to a lot of modern movies as they used still images as an interesting contrast from today. Something I got from the video is the use of sound to boost visuals. While I knew this idea before, the short films did this better than expected. Because of the still images, there isn't a lot going on visually which makes the scene heavily rely on sound to make it stand. This can be utilized in my group's film and we can pick music to fit the genre we picked. The narration was also an aspect I enjoyed as it really helped push forward the bleak and even depressing tone of the movie. For our film, I envisioned no narration but after consideration, it could help bring the concept of the mystery out more. Lastly, the use of transitions was a great addition that will be used in my group film. Some transitions can make the audience digest the visuals more and even add more drama to the scene. For example, a slow transition used in the short films created a slow and somber feeling to help with the bleak tone. Our film will likely go down this path and use transitions to create a confusing and eerie vibe. The article is similar to the video in that it discusses the narrator and the still images. It focuses on the plot, however, which is the big takeaway from the article and is what my group will need to focus on as well as production. The plot makes the film interesting and a good plot is the base of a film, with editing and audio meant to add life to the already strong idea of the film.
