Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie
One thing that 12 Monkeys does is make it seem very dull on purpose. The short film uses a narrator with a very monotone voice to show this off. Also, the movie uses still images and adds voiceovers or other sounds to them after. This once again achieves the same goal, being to make the film detached. Le Jetee uses certain transitions to acquire a "dream-like ambiance" which helps to contrast the clean shots when characters are conversing. The film also uses audio to great effect and adds it a lot of important and disturbing imagery to amplify the visuals. An example used for this is the audio of a heart beating for a dramatic and intense scene. This helps the audience feel the intensity of the pictures being shown as if their own heart was racing. Another example of this is a slick and romantic score for a positive effect on the audience, once again enhancing the images.
