Title Research: Parasite

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

Some of the titles included were the name of the studio (CJ Entertainment), name of the production company (Barunson E&A), Title of the movie (Parasite), and the name of the actors (Song Kang Ho, Lee Sun Kyun, Cho Yeo Jeong, Choi Woo Shik, Park So Dam, Lee Jung Eun, Chang Hyae Jin, Park Myung Hoon, Jung Ziso, Jung Hyeon Jun)

- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

Some of the imagery that was prioritized was the outside of the long rectangular window, from what we can see we see the many people just living their normal lives as citizens we see one individual riding a bike as the others just peacefully walk down the road. As the camera pans down we see a man on his phone, presumably attempting to connect to the wifi but with no luck. He gets up and walks to speak with other characters such as his sister and mother, the camera tracks his movement and with doing so shows off some of the rooms in the small home.

- What connotations do these images carry?

If we look at these images metaphorically we can tell that this may most likely represent the different economical and social class types, when we look outside the window we see cars driving and couples with shopping bags walking peacefully. This represents the middle class aka the average class. Where citizens aren’t provided with the best of the best but have most of their basic necessities. When the camera pans down however we move a bit lower on the class types which represents the lower class and or the working poor. This is further established as the man with the phone says that there is no longer free wifi because the woman who lives upstairs has changed it, and while the character walks to speak with others we see in the last room a woman sitting on the ground and a man sleeping on the floor, we can assume that this may be their bedroom but there is no bed in sight.

- How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

Parasite develops the mystery aspect from this film from the outset by the simple scenery and choice of music. As said, if the audience truly pays attention to how the camera moves and the setting this takes place we begin to ask ourselves why is this family in this situation and living condition, as for the music the tune is a piano being played in a manner that is not too intense but not too peaceful either, this sets the scene for a mysterious and eery tone.

- What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

One of the many strategies this film discloses is appealing to the location and the age range. This movie takes place in South Korea, Seoul. Since this movie had made it to the United States, Koreans who watched the movie were more drawn to it because of this location as well as other people who enjoy international films. The age range also factors in, the four characters we see are in a few different spots on the spectrum but they are not that far apart. We have the two characters who look to be in their 20’s and two other characters who appear to be in their 40’s or 50’s

- How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

The use of camera angles was one used most effectively, some angles that were used was Panning, High angle shot, Two person shot, Close Up shot, and Tracking. Which was used very little but conveyed the entire sequence and where this takes place. Lighting was also an effectively used strategy and one of the editing techniques that was used but barely noticed was a fade in transition from the Production company and Name of the studio to the actual first scene of the movie.
